About Sunset & Golden Hour
This is the shortest light of the day and the hardest to paint without it turning into a postcard. The trap is the sky. Give it everything and the land underneath becomes a black strip, and the picture has nothing to stand on.
The paintings here are built the other way round. Orange and amber together make up nearly half of what is measured on these canvases, but the warm is carried down into the ground rather than kept in the sky, so the light appears to be falling on something. Thick paint takes the last of the sun on the ridge of every stroke, which is a trick only a physical surface can do and a screen cannot show you.
Warm paintings do warm rooms a favor and cool ones a bigger one. In a north facing room that never gets direct sun, one of these does more than a lamp. Gold on the frame is not too much here, which is not true of most of the catalog.
