The sea is never one color and any painting that says it is has stopped looking. Across this collection the measured palette runs blue and teal into orange and warm brown, which is the honest answer: water takes the sky, and the sky at the coast changes faster than anywhere inland.
Weather is the real subject here. A flat calm and a running swell are painted differently, not just colored differently, and the knife makes that visible. Thick horizontal work for a heavy sea, thinner and flatter for water that is barely moving. Cliffs get the most paint of anything on the canvas, because rock against water is where the picture needs its weight.
Coastal work is forgiving on a wall. It carries warm and cool rooms equally, which most subjects will not do, and it is one of the few things that reads well in a bathroom or a hallway where the light changes through the day.
