About Forest & Woodland
Woodland is the one subject where the light is the structure. Take away the shafts coming through the canopy and you have a wall of green with no way in.
The measured palette here is the earthiest of anything in the catalog, running deep brown and olive rather than the blues that dominate elsewhere. That is trunks and floor rather than leaves. Canopy is a thin band at the top of most of these paintings and the ground takes the space, which is closer to how a wood actually feels to stand in than the version with the light streaming in.
Knife work suits bark and ground litter, both of which are texture rather than shape. Where the paint is thickest is usually the forest floor.
Green and brown are easy neighbors for furniture and hard neighbors for a busy wallpaper. On a plain wall these settle immediately. A white frame keeps them from going heavy in a small room.
