Two ends of the same season. Late color first, then what is left when it has gone.
Brown and amber carry most of these canvases, with blue arriving as the year turns. That progression is the point of grouping them together: the autumn work is almost entirely warm, and the winter work keeps just enough of the warm to stop the cold going flat. A bare tree painted in pure gray is a dead painting.
Thick paint does something particular in autumn subjects. Turning leaves are already broken color, red next to gold next to green with no blending anywhere, and a knife puts that down the way it actually appears rather than mixing it into a single orange.
These suit rooms that get used in the colder half of the year, which sounds obvious and is worth saying anyway. A dining room or a room with a fire in it is where they earn their place.
