About Arctic & Ice

Ice is not white. It takes its color from whatever is above it, and in the far north that is blue for most of the day, then a long slow warm hour at either end. Measure the paintings in this collection and blue accounts for close to half of what is on the canvas, with a band of orange running through the rest. That is not a stylistic choice. It is what the light does up there.

Palette knife suits ice better than a brush does. A knife leaves an edge, and ice is nothing but edges: pressure ridges, the lip of a glacier, the hard line where a floe meets open water. The paint is laid on thick and left alone, so the ridge of oil catches your lamp the way the real thing catches the sun.

These are cold paintings and they behave like it on a wall. They hold a room that is already bright, and they will fight a warm one. If the space has yellow lamps and wood, the box frame in black gives the picture its own edge to sit behind.
